Ciena Job Opportunities – Scope of Responsibilities
In this role, you will provide system-level pre- and post-sales support for Ciena’s customer base. This includes testing, troubleshooting, and remote technical assistance for Ciena products. You will play a key part in automating data collection and issue resolution using JavaScript and Python scripting languages. A strong understanding of fiber optic transport and/or switching protocols is crucial. Proficiency in data communications protocols, such as Ethernet and IP networks, is required. Familiarity with Linux-based systems would be advantageous. You may also have on-site interactions with customers, addressing network planning, deployment, technical issues, and design aspects.
Ciena Job Openings 2023 – Specific Responsibilities
Your responsibilities in this role will include:
- Automating data collection and resolving issues through automation
- Providing remote technical support for identified Ciena products on a 24×7 basis, including evenings and weekends
- Collaborating with senior engineers to address field issues and communicate with the design and supply chain teams regarding problems
- Utilizing debug tools and conducting lab research to assist customers in resolving technical problems
- Collecting relevant information for escalating incidents/issues to senior engineers, which may involve engineering/design, product/project management, documentation, or training
- Providing customer feedback to quality assurance, design, product management, technical publications, and training teams
- Contributing to the publishing of MOP/ISB/FSB documents
- Enhancing the knowledge base (KCS)
- Acting as a lead engineer for specific customers
- Performing resident engineering functions on-site or remotely
- Traveling to customer sites and Ciena locations globally

To be eligible for these positions, you should have:
- A bachelor’s degree in a technical field (e.g., Engineering, Computer Science) from a four-year college or university, or an equivalent combination of education and experience
- Experience in automating tasks using scripting languages such as JavaScript and Python
- Foundational knowledge of fiber optic transport and/or switching equipment operations
- Preferably, experience in a technical support role with a telecommunications equipment vendor in the Telco industry
- Basic problem-solving experience with OTN/SONET/SDH equipment, Carrier Ethernet equipment, or associated fiber optic facilities
Candidate Profile
The ideal candidate will possess the following qualities:
- Proficiency in various office software applications, including Microsoft Outlook, Word, and Excel
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
- Self-motivated with excellent time management skills, capable of working with minimal supervision
- Understanding of transport and switching systems for telecommunications applications and optical networking
- Familiarity with different types of test equipment for optical and protocol testing
- Ability to troubleshoot system-level issues with fiber optic telecommunications transport and switching equipment
- Solid foundation in OTN, SONET/SDH/DWDM, Carrier Ethernet protocols, and a general understanding of other switching/transport concepts
- Knowledge of computers, data communications, Linux, and IP network experience would be beneficial
- Experience with network management systems would be advantageous
- Strong background in building relationships and focusing on customer satisfaction
